Heidemarie Hanekop, Volker Wittke

Abstract (english)

The New Role of Users in Internet-based Innovation Processes In the field of social science, the active role of customers and users in innovation and production processes is a phenomenon that has been debated for more than thirty years. However, with the development and expansion of the internet, this role is acquiring a new quality. Users no longer produce single products for their own needs, but rather highly competitive and complex mass products and services with the help of worldwide collaboration and distribution. The Open Source software development and Wikipedia are exemplary for especially far-reaching and efficient variations of this new form of internet-based user participation. Stimulated by these examples, more recent economic approaches suggest a new “open” paradigm for innovation strategies of firms. Altogether, the debate is suffering because user participation in these development processes, which are based on a complex division of labour, are only being analysed in an imprecise and undifferentiated way – that is, the exact role of the user remains vague. On the basis of available studies about Open Source software development and Wikipedia, we argue that the new quality of user participation lies in the fact that they participate in the whole development process with improvements that, although achieved in small steps, are on the whole very far-reaching and result in an optimisation and advancement of products and services. However, this form of user participation must fulfil many pre-conditions on the organisational as well as social and institutional levels. On the one hand, it calls for open, transparent and recursive innovation and production processes occurring in small steps. On the other hand, this form of collaboration demands a social and institutional frame formed by a community in which rules and norms are established. These deviate from those rules according to which product development is coordinated within commercial processes of value creation. We identify this specific form of product development as collaborative production. Whether this is compatible with value creation processes of firms from the perspective of social science will be decided on the basis of these organisational and social preconditions.
